Majlis, which means an ‘association’. The Trust has two distinct centres - Legal and Cultural. The Majlis Legal Centre, headed by advocate Flavia Agnes who is a women’s rights activist and a legal scholar, works on issues related to women’s legal rights and access to justice. Its vibrant all-women team comprises lawyers and social activists, interns and other organisations which contribute to its functioning. At the micro-level, It helps individual women access their rights through legal interventions in court and training. At the macro level, it endeavours to bring about social change through policy level interventions, public campaigns and public interest litigations.
Majlis has provided socio-legal support to 1,500 women in a year in cases of domestic and sexual violence. It has created a handbook with Guidelines on Domestic Violence in collaboration with WCD (Women and Child Department) and State Consultation on POCSO Act. It has developed a handbook on Standard Operating procedures for Mumbai Police (Sexual offences against Women & Children).
